Sunny Deol's Comeback: How Gadar 2 Reset a Career
Sunny Deol's career stalled for years before Gadar 2 in 2023. What his biography records about the gap, the return and the reasons critics give.

Few film careers have been written off and then restored as visibly as Sunny Deol's. For more than a decade he had few hits. Then a sequel to a 2001 blockbuster put him back at the centre of the box office. This piece lays out what his biography records about the gap, the return and the reasons critics have offered.
The long gap
According to his Wikipedia biography, Deol was among the biggest action stars of the 1990s, with Ghayal, Damini, Ghatak and Border to his name. Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (2001) became the highest-grossing Hindi film to that point. After that, the biography describes a period of sporadic success. He avoided traditional action films because of back injuries and experimented with other genres, with little success. He later said his style of cinema had gone out of trend and that suitable roles were scarce.
The list of setbacks is specific. Lakeer (2004) was a flop. Jo Bole So Nihaal (2005) angered Sikh groups, and bombings at two theatres led to its withdrawal and eventual box-office failure. Teesri Aankh (2006) was panned and Naksha (2006) failed. Fox (2009) was another commercial failure. There were bright spots, notably Apne (2007), which for the first time put Deol, his father Dharmendra and his brother Bobby on screen together, and Yamla Pagla Deewana (2011), declared a hit.
The biography adds a telling detail. While contemporaries such as Sanjay Dutt and Anil Kapoor moved into supporting roles, Deol held his ground as a leading man.
The return
In 2022 he starred in R. Balki's Chup: Revenge of the Artist, which drew positive reviews after a two-year break. The real turn came with Gadar 2, released on 11 August 2023. Directed by Anil Sharma, it was set during the 1971 war and followed Tara Singh crossing into Pakistan to bring back his son. The biography puts its worldwide earnings at Rs 691 crore, making it the fourth-highest grosser of the year and the highest-grossing film of his career.
The honours followed. He won the Zee Cine Award for Best Actor (Viewer's Choice) and was named GQ India Leading Man of the Year 2023. The biography also says he is the first Indian actor to deliver an all-time blockbuster as a lead after turning 60, noting that he was 66 when he did so. Treat that as the biography's claim rather than a settled record.
Proof it was not a one-off
The comeback did not stop at one sequel. Jaat, released on 10 April 2025, grossed over Rs 100 crore, which the biography counts as his third film to do so after Gadar and its sequel, and it topped Netflix India's films chart for four weeks. In January 2026 he played Lt. Col. Fateh Singh Kaler in Border 2, the spiritual sequel to the 1997 film, which the biography calls a blockbuster and the second-highest-grossing Indian film of the year. In July 2026 he made his direct-to-streaming debut in Ikka, which drew mixed-to-positive reviews.
Why it worked, according to critics
The biography collects two explanations. NDTV's Yasser Usman noted that Deol did not reinvent himself; instead, audience tastes circled back to his style over time. The Times of India's Jigar Shah attributed the comeback to nostalgia, arguing that the mass audience had not forgotten him but the industry had stopped producing his type of films.
Those are opinions, and they are compatible with each other. Both place the cause in the market, not in a change in the actor.
What we could not confirm
We relied on his Wikipedia biography and the critics it quotes. We did not verify the box-office figures against producer or trade statements, and we did not read the Netflix viewing numbers in a primary source. Gadar 2 and Border 2 totals may be revised as trade reports settle.
