Ajay Devgn has taken his next film, Chauhaan, to Kargil in Ladakh, and the shoot puts him back in a region he last filmed in more than two decades ago. Bollywood Hungama reported on 10 October 2026 that the actor had arrived a few days earlier and had already started filming, and Rising Kashmir later reported that the Kargil schedule is expected to wrap on 26 October. Here is what has been reported about the shoot, the setting and the film.

Life on the Kargil set

According to a source quoted by Bollywood Hungama, "Some key scenes will be shot in this picturesque town." The same source said the makers had obtained the necessary permissions in advance and made elaborate arrangements so that the shoot runs smoothly.

The weather is part of the picture. "It's quite cold here in Kargil, and the weather will surely add an authentic touch to the scenes of Chauhaan," the source told the outlet. Rising Kashmir, which spoke to a member of the production team, reported that the actor will shoot at different locations across Kargil, and added that he is enjoying the cold much as he did on his earlier shoot in the region.

The makers have not publicly said which sequences are being filmed, a point The Times of India also noted in its report on the schedule.

Back in Ladakh, 23 years after LOC: Kargil

The schedule marks Devgn's return to Ladakh for a film shoot after 23 years. His earlier visit was for J. P. Dutta's war drama LOC: Kargil (2003), for which, as Bollywood Hungama recalls, he filmed some crucial scenes in the mountainous region. At that time Ladakh was part of the former state of Jammu and Kashmir. It became a separate Union Territory in 2019, with Leh and Kargil as its two capitals.

Rising Kashmir also points to his other shoots in the wider region. In May 2024, the unit of Rohit Shetty's Singham Again filmed sequences in downtown Srinagar, Lal Chowk and Sonamarg, with Devgn appearing alongside Jackie Shroff. The paper reported that the action scenes drew attention from residents and were shot under tight security.

What Chauhaan is

Chauhaan is directed by Neeraj Yadav and produced by Jyoti Deshpande, Aanand L Rai and Himanshu Sharma under Jio Studios and Colour Yellow Productions, with Jio Studios also presenting the film. It is Devgn's first collaboration with Aanand L Rai.

The film was announced on 25 June 2026, the birth anniversary of Devgn's late father, the action director Veeru Devgan. The announcement video used the song Jumma Chumma De De from the 1991 film Hum and ended with the line "Pathaanon se kehna, Chauhaan aa raha hai", which The Times of India translates as "Tell the Pathaans, Chauhaan is coming."

Movie Talkies reports that the story is set against the backdrop of unrest in Jammu and Kashmir and explores the challenges faced by security personnel and police. The same outlet notes that the teaser drew criticism online over its portrayal of pellet gun injuries. The makers have not announced a full cast list or further plot details, and the film is scheduled to open in cinemas on 1 October 2027.

A career shaped on film sets

Devgn comes from a film family: his father, Veeru Devgan, was a stunt choreographer and action director, and his mother, Veena Devgan, is a film producer. His debut, Phool Aur Kaante (1991), opened with a scene in which he performs a split while balanced between two motorcycles, according to his Wikipedia biography.

Since then he has appeared in more than 100 films and won National Film Awards for Best Actor for Zakhm, The Legend of Bhagat Singh and Tanhaji. The Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri in 2016.

The cover photo on this story comes from another of his sets. It shows Devgn with director Raj Kumar Gupta on the set of Raid, the 2018 crime drama the pair made together before reuniting for Raid 2 in 2025.

Fresh off Drishyam: The Conclusion

Devgn heads into the cold after a strong start for Drishyam: The Conclusion, which opened over the October 2 weekend. According to the figures cited by The Times of India, the film opened with Rs 66.75 crore net in India, the biggest opening of his career. The paper cited Sacnilk's provisional estimate of Rs 245.50 crore net in India after the film's first Thursday, and cautioned that the numbers could be revised.

His calendar after that is full. Movie Talkies lists Golmaal 5 for January 2027 and Ranger for mid-2027, followed by Chauhaan in October 2027.
