Madhuri Dixit: The Record Behind the Dhak Dhak Legacy
Madhuri Dixit holds a record 17 Filmfare nominations and six wins. The numbers behind the Dhak Dhak legacy, from Tezaab to The Fame Game.

Madhuri Dixit's name is often used as shorthand for 1990s stardom. The numbers behind it are specific and checkable. This profile draws on her Wikipedia biography, which cites contemporary reviews, and on a Filmfare retrospective found in search results.
The record
Wikipedia says Dixit has received six Filmfare Awards from a record seventeen nominations. Four were for Best Actress, for Dil (1990), Beta (1992), Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994) and Dil To Pagal Hai (1997). A fifth was for Best Supporting Actress, for playing the courtesan Chandramukhi in Devdas (2002). Her sixth Filmfare Award was a special award for completing 25 years in the film industry.
The government of India awarded her the Padma Shri in 2008, the fourth-highest civilian honour, according to the same entry. She has appeared in more than 70 Hindi films.
How the nickname began
A Filmfare feature on her career, as shown in search results, links the "Dhak Dhak Girl" nickname to the song "Dhak Dhak Karne Laga" from Beta in 1992. Wikipedia places the film among her top-grossing romantic dramas, and says she won her Best Actress award for Beta.
The rise
Dixit made her acting debut in 1984 in the drama Abodh and, after several films that failed commercially, rose to prominence with the action drama Tezaab (1988). Wikipedia says her role as Mohini, a poor woman forced to dance to earn money for her father, gave her mainstream recognition, and that Tezaab was the highest-grossing film of the year. She also drew critical appreciation for Prem Pratigyaa, Parinda, Anjaam, Mrityudand, Pukar and Lajja.
Her first collaboration with Shah Rukh Khan came in Anjaam (1994), in which she played Shivani Chopra, a revenge-seeking wife and mother. The entry says that role earned her a seventh Best Actress nomination at Filmfare.
Dance as a signature
Wikipedia quotes the Kathak master Pandit Birju Maharaj, who choreographed her in Devdas, calling her "the best Bollywood dancer" for her versatility. The choreographer Saroj Khan, who worked with her on many films, calls her "a choreographer's delight". Hindustan Times, the entry says, credited her with giving a technical twist to dance sequences in Hindi films.
Standing in the industry
The entry says Box Office India placed her on its list of top actresses for ten consecutive years, from 1988 to 1997, and that Forbes ranked her fifth on a 2001 list of the most powerful Indian film stars. It quotes Reuters as writing that in her prime she was "the undisputed queen of Bollywood" and that her popularity and fees rivalled those of the biggest male stars. The critic Baradwaj Rangan is quoted calling her "the last of the all-in-one female stars who could do drama and comedy and dance".
Hiatus and return
After Devdas she took a five-year break and returned with the dance film Aaja Nachle (2007), which the entry says was a box-office failure but earned positive reviews for her portrayal. She relocated to India with her family in 2011 and later appeared in Dedh Ishqiya (2014), Gulaab Gang (2014) and Total Dhamaal (2019).
In 2022 she led the Netflix series The Fame Game, playing a high-profile actress, and appeared in the Prime Video film Maja Ma. The entry quotes a Times of India reviewer calling her performance "lived-in".
What we could not confirm
We read the Filmfare retrospective only through a search summary. The record count of seventeen nominations is Wikipedia's figure, and we did not independently check Filmfare's archives. We did not verify the Box Office India and Forbes lists directly; they are cited by Wikipedia. We found no source for her current work after the 2022 releases.
